Political Asylum I-589

Political Asylum I-589

You may apply for political asylum from abroad or from within the United States. When political asylum is requested at the United States embassy abroad, it is known as Refugee Program. When political asylum is requested within the United States, it is known as asylum. It requires proof that the applicant has a well-founded fear of being persecuted or harassed in their country for belonging to or being a member of a specific social group, race, religion, nationality, political opinion.

If asylum is won, the person will have the opportunity to apply for residency after one year. There will be a date when you must wait for your turn. After entering the I-485 application, search for residency.

Important: You should not submit the asylum application without seeking legal advice, since, if it is denied, you will be placed in deportation proceedings, and you will have to appear before an Immigration Court judge.
